NAMING / INDEPENDENT COVERAGE

.ORG Domains Newsletter

Match the name to the organization’s real purpose.

Use this reading route to evaluate .ORG addresses for resource libraries, communities, associations, and other intended uses. Keep the name’s implied purpose aligned with the operator’s accurate identity. An extension should not substitute for clear information about who runs a project. Responsible naming and long-term account administration belong in the same planning conversation.

Review the expectations you create

Ask what a new visitor might infer from the complete name and compare that impression with the actual project. Do not imply official status, charitable credentials, or public authority that the operator does not have. Accurate identity information must stand on its own. Review the name alongside the public description rather than expecting the suffix to explain the organization.

Plan for organizational continuity

Document who controls the registration and how future administrators will receive appropriate access. Keep renewal and recovery responsibilities attached to roles rather than only to a departing volunteer or employee. A long-lived project needs a maintainable address as well as a suitable name. Arrange secure handling of account access outside ordinary public or shared research notes.

Compare the whole address

Evaluate wording, pronunciation, acquisition cost, and ongoing terms alongside other credible candidates. A thoughtful name should remain understandable in email, printed references, and spoken introductions. The extension guide offers a common comparison method without assuming every project should choose the same ending. Note the advantages you accept and the limitations you will need to manage.
